If you think about it, a church should function a lot like a box of matches… How, you ask? Well first of all, we as humans are a lot like matches – we were created for a purpose; to obtain a flame that gives us a massive amount of power and self-worth. When a match receives a flame, it gains possession of a power outside of itself – fire – which can be used either for tremendous good or potential harm. Regardless, a match with a flame is a powerful thing. However, a match without a flame is simply a cheap, useless stick of wood. It’s sort of like Jesus words in John 15:5, “Without me, you are nothing.”
As Christians, we are commanded to live out our faith and use our flame to set the nations ablaze. But often times, this becomes difficult without the proper community and biblical training. Here’s where the Matchbox comes in – a gathering place for everyone looking for a flame. Hence, Matchbox Ministries is a place where students can come to search for truth and significance in an environment designed for them. However, it must be said that finding truth isn’t always easy. For instance, Jesus calls us into a life of adventurous change and challenging transformation. In other words, it’s not always comfortable. So again, like matches, there is always a slight amount of “friction” that occurs when being set on fire for Christ. But once the ignition process is complete, the identity transformation begins immediately. Lastly, we believe that truth is contagious. The Matchbox analogy exemplifies Christ’s invitation to the Great Commission and his exhortations about letting our light shine before all men. In other words, it isn’t our religious expertise that brings people to Christ; it is simply our love, which is the love of God shown to us through his Son Jesus Christ. This love is the single most powerful force in the universe, and with it, we believe the world can and will be changed. It’s time to set the world ablaze one teen at a time… are you ready?
